Mary Meyers – A Ticket to Work Success!

The horses Mary Meyers rescued kept her from staying in bed when the pain in her body prevented her from doing much of anything else. Her family was self sufficient, but the horses needed fed and let out of the barn. She was a certified dog trainer, too. But that had gone by the wayside because of a condition known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

“Everybody needs a reason to get out of bed in the morning,” said the Spotsylvania resident.

Her trial started with a broken toe and led to inflammation of the sympathetic nervous system that Meyers said felt like gasoline on fire in her veins. Today Meyers is back on her feet working 15 hours a week as a dog trainer at PETCO—thanks to an epidural pain pump, Rappahannock Goodwill Industries Job Help Center and a Ticket to Work.

“Who else would know more about helping people with disabilities than Goodwill,” said Meyers, who assigned her ticket to Goodwill.

Meyers needed part time and flexibility for doctors’ appointments and pain flare-ups. PETCO, a company that works with ticket recipients, needed a dog trainer.  For Meyers, it was a match. “It makes me feel good that I am able to do something I thought I would never do again,” she said.
